What is a carer?

A carer is someone who has taken on the unpaid role of supporting a family member or friend, who is unable to do particular things by themselves. This may range from doing some shopping for them, to having to do all their physical care and / or managing their finances and making other decisions on their behalf if they do not have mental capacity.

The responsibility of being a carer can often be unexpected, when the adult’s abilities suddenly change as a result of ill health. Often a carer has to make that decision without much time to consider the potential impact it may have on their personal life and relationships. Whilst in many ways it can be a very rewarding experience, caring for another person can be very challenging especially if they have to interact with an adult social care system with whom they have not had involvement before.
